Teak Shelf

This project was completed during April, 2001. The shelf is made from teak strips that were laminated together to form wider boards. Once construction was complete, the shelf was sprayed with Deft satin lacquer, polished and mounted in the garage (a.k.a., shop). I've been told only a nut would put a teak shelf in the garage.

Teak Shelf, front view The shelf and backboard were constructed of teak that was planed down to 3/4" thick. The two brackets are twice as thick (1-1/2") and screwed to the back and the top providing a sturdy right angle.
Teak Shelf, bottom view Three Shaker pegs were installed on the face of the back to hold a shop coat and aprons.
Teak Shelf, front bottom view The two brackets were made from two boards glued together to double the thickness. The screws through the top shelf were countersunk and plugged with wooden plugs cut from the same teak from which the shelf was constructed.
Teak Shelf, front view with yardstick for scale The shelf measures 32-3/4" long and 12-7/16" deep providing 2.8 square feet of shelf storage.
Teak Shelf, back view Two keyholes were cut in the back of the vertical board. Mounting the shelf to a wall is as simple as screwing two screws into the wall 16 inches apart (one in each of two wall studs), leaving about a quarter inch of the screws protruding from the wall. The shelf is then slipped onto the screw heads and set in place.
Teak Shelf, keyhole hanger detail view A close up picture of one of the keyholes reveals how this hanger works. The head of the screw is inserted in the round area in the bottom of the slot. As the shelf is lowered into place, the head is trapped inside a T shaped slot allowing only the shank of the screw to protrude though the board.
