Storage Bin

This solid pine storage bin is designed to hold potatoes and onions (bottom two partitions) with miscellaneous storage in the top partition. The plan for the bin is available from U-Bild. One of the deviations from the published plans was to add wheels on the bottom so that it could be easily moved.

Storage Bin, front view The finished storage bin stands 40-1/2" tall. The front of each section is constructed by forming a grooved frame around 1/2" hardware cloth (square wire mesh) to allow ventilation.
Storage Bin, front/side view The sides of the bin were formed using 12" wide pine boards. Using the wide single boards resulted in sides that did not need to be formed by gluing narrower boards together to make a wide board. As a result, the sides maintain their original knotty pine appearance without interruption from glue joints.
Storage Bin, bottom bins open The bottom two compartments are hinged at the bottom of the front frame and tip forward to reveal individual containers intended to hold onions and potatoes. The forward tilt is limited by the design of the compartment.
Storage Bin, top door opened The top compartment is for miscellaneous storage and is a cavity covered with the same type of frame and wire door. Forward tilt of this door is limited by brass hardware attached to the left side of the door and cabinet.
Storage Bin, open view The doors are attached to the frame of the cabinet with antique brass butt hinges. Heavy smooth antique brass knobs finish the decor on the front of the doors. With the exception of the inside of the bottom two compartments, the project was stained with Puritan Pine stain and sprayed with a satin lacquer finish.
Storage Bin, stocked view (open) Once loaded with onions, potatoes and miscellaneous pasta products, the storage bin has become a functional element of kitchen storage.
Storage Bin, stocked view (closed) The extra storage stands proudly in the corner of the kitchen. And it confirms a universal truth; added storage space can always be used!
