Angel Chime

This project was constructed for the March 17, 2001 dinner/auction. The finished angel chime was donated to the church for use in the St. Patrick's Day fund raiser silent auction. The wood in the angel and harp was primed and sprayed with a white exterior paint so that the angel would be more resistant to the elements. The angel was sold in the silent auction for $75 which was less than the cost of the materials.

Angel Chime The angel exceeds four feet in height and was constructed using plans and chime supplies from Meisel Hardware Specialists. The strings of the harp were replaced by chimes.
Angel Chime, side view The angel was made from 3/4" and 1-1/2" wood. In the base of the angel, two holes were drilled to accommodate rods being driven into the ground through the base and being attached to the angel to protect it from falling over, particularly in the wind.
Angel Chime, front view The face of the angel was made from five pieces of 3/4" stock cut to the shapes of the pattern from Meisel and glued together. When combined with the 1-1/2" stock making the angel body, the head and hair truly appear three dimensional.
Angel Chime One major modification was made to the plans. That was to attach the base of the angel to the base of the harp with a small wooden piece. Originally, the harp was only supported by the wings of the angel which stressed them considerably. The wings were made of 3/4" softwood that would not tolerate too much stress. Attaching the bases together made the connection between the angel and harp rigid and provided a project that was more a single unit with much less of a chance that the wood making the wings would break with the grain.
